Welcome to the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) - Reception

School day in Reception starts at 8.55am and finishes at 3.00pm

We welcome parents/carers to come into our EYFS unit with their child each morning for stay and play from 8:45 - 8:55am. Children will be encouraged to practise their letter formation during this time. We then 'shake the tambourine' which is the sign to let parents know it is time for registration. After the Autumn term the children then begin to line up outside where they are greeted by their class teacher.

In our Reception classes everyone is welcome. We have high expectations and strive to meet the needs of every child. We aim to enrich children's learning by providing stimulating and fun learning opportunities both structured and in our free choice continuous provision. The curriculum for the Early Years Foundation stage is organised into seven Areas of Learning:

Prime Areas

  • Communication and Language
  • Physical Development
  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development

Specific Areas

  • Literacy Development (reading/writing)
  • Mathematical Development
  • Understanding the World
  • Expressive Arts and Design

We also aim to stimulate emotional and spiritual growth.

Details of what is planned for the 2017/18 year for this class will be following shortly.

Here are some activity websites you may find useful

Reading Books - We send home reading books every Monday for parents to read with their child and would like them returned back to school every Friday. Book bags can be purchased from the school office.

Each day during registration we choose one child from each class to be a 'special helper'. The 'special helper' chooses three of their peers to give them a compliment. The special helper can then sit on the 'special helper' chair and will have the opportunity to do little jobs and stand at the front of the line that day. You can see who has been the 'special helper' each day on the notice on display in your child's classroom. We also have a 'star of the week', this is a child who is picked for the weekly certificate in our school assembly for doing something good that week. The 'star of the week' notice is also pinned up in your child's class. Children are also encouraged to do a piece of independent writing throughout the week for our V.I.P. box. Children are asked to do a piece of writing during there free choice choosing time which they can then put in the V.I.P. box with the chance of being selected to sit at the 'V.I.P table' and will get a small treat during snack time on a Friday.

Outdoor Provision – We offer our children continuous outdoor learning throughout the year so we ask parents to ensure that children have suitable clothing that is appropriate for all weathers, for example, sun hat, wellies, coat. Also during the hot weather we ask that parents apply sun cream prior to bringing them in school.

Milk and fruit - All children are provided with a piece of fruit every afternoon during our 'snack time'. It is optional for children to have milk and parents can pay for milk from reception to year six. If you would like your child to have a carton of milk during snack time you will receive a letter/order form from school before the start of every term.

P.E. - Children in reception usually go over to the main hall every Thursday for P.E. Our P.E. curriculum coverage is as follows; Autumn term - Dance, Spring term - Gym and Summer term - Games. Children are not required to have a P.E. kit during the Autumn term as dance is usually done in our uniforms and bare feet. Children will then need a P.E. kit for the Spring term (first week back in January after Christmas holidays) Our P.E. kit is a white t-shirt, black/navy shorts and black pumps. It would be really beneficial if parents could encourage their children to start dressing and undressing themselves as this develops the children's independence, saves a lot of time and counts towards your child's early learning goal in the Physical development area of learning. We also strongly encourage parents to put/write name labels in all items of children's clothing and footwear.

Medicines - Staff may only administer medicines or creams that have been prescribed by a doctor. Parent/carers will need to fill in a form before any medicines/creams can be administered. See a member of staff for more details.

Birthdays - Every child's birthday is a special occasion that we love to celebrate. If parents want to bring something into school for their child's birthday we would suggest some of the following, a book for the class to share or a selection of fruit. (No party bags or birthday cakes please)

W/C 8th October 2018
