This week, we have been very lucky to have had two visits from Just Youth. We have sang songs, watched videos and talked about the Lenten journey. We have spoken about the sarcificises God has made for us and our own sacrificises we will make around this time. We have made and coloured our own creations to take home later in the week. Thank you Just Youth for visiting us!

The children in the EYFS were so excited to see the snow in our playground, they put on their wellies, coats, gloves and scarfs and went out to explore.

They had a great time exploring the snow, and even found some ice hiding underneath the snow!

Growing to be like God, by Miss Howells

In R.E we are learning how to grow to be like God, linking to our Lenten promises which we made at the end of last term. As this first week in school is our 'smiling week' we have taken pictures of ourselves smiling and glued them onto a plastic cup. We have filled our plastic cup with soil, planted seeds and finally watered them. When our seeds begin to grow, the plants will grow to look like our hair! :)

The children in the EYFS have enjoyed taking part in many different activities to celebrate Chinese New Year, they also  sampled a variety of Chinese Foods.

The children had a wonderful afternoon, learning lots of new skills.

Today we held a collective worship with lots of our parents and carers :) We thanked God for the toys we have and discussed why we have toys and who we share our experiences with. We sang a song about our friends and said a lovely prayer. Thank you all for joining us! 

E-Safety in the EYFS , by Miss Howells

Today we held an E-Safety talk about how to be safe using technology at home and in school. We read the story of Smartie the Penguin and helped him make the right decisions when using his new iPad. We learned mummy penguin's song to help us remember what to do if we need help when using our own iPads, phones etc.. "Before you tap and click, you need to stop and think, and tell someone!" Thank you parents and carers for joining us :)

We  have been working in our laboratory and doing lots of fun and exciting experiments - we have been Scientists!!!

We did a number of experiments including floating and sinking - making predictions first and then trying different objects in the water. We thought about why things happen.

We have been using magnets and metal detectors, experimenting with chromatography - colour splitting, making bubbling volcanoes and finding out about decay and bacteria,

Our Lab is still open - do come and investigate!

A Visit from Santa, by Mrs Hall

The children had been so good that Santa himself came to visit.

He heard different requests from the boys and girls and told them to keep up the good work!

Post Office Visit, by Mrs Welch

This week our 'big book' was 'The Jolly Postman'. We then received a letter from Santa asking us to continue to be good and that he hoped we had a lovely Christmas. The children then decided to write a letter to Santa to thank him for our gifts. Then we searched the internet to find his address and discussed the journey of sending a letter. We then walked to our local Post Office to buy a stamp and we posted our letters in the post box. We are now awaiting Santa's response!

Parents, cares,  friends and family loved watching the EYFS  children performing “The Very Sleepy Shepherd,” a story about a lovable shepherd who just can’t keep awake until he hears the news of Jesus from the angel.  We are glad you could join him on his big adventure to see the newborn King this Christmas.

This morning, we had a lovely suprise from Year 1 and 2. They have been busy thinking of fantastic ideas to write their own stories. They have each written a book themselves, including illistrations, and asked if they could read them to Nursery and Reception. We really enjoyed hearing our partners stories and asked a few questions afterwards. Thank you for sharing!

The children in the EYFS have been busy writing letters to Father Christmas and developing their cutting skills by cutting pictures out of catalogues of what they would like for Christmas.

They have also been making snowmen at the snowmen factory

Just Youth - Advent, by Miss Howells

Today, we had a lovely visit from Just Youth. Just Youth told us all about Advent and how we prepare for Christmas. We discussed different gifts that Jesus would like from us e.g  prayers, smiles and for us to be nice to one another. To show that we are beginning to get ready for Christmas, we designed our own hand by writing our names and coloured them in. Just Youth have created a beautiful piece from this, using our hands to create a heart to show our love for God.  

Christ the King Celebrations, by Miss Howells

In school, we have been learning about Christ the King's Feast Day and why it is celebrated. To celebrate Christ the King, we decided to make and decorate crowns. Earlier in the week we gave out hand written invitations to our parents and carers because we thought it would be nice to share this special occasion with our families. A crown workshop was held at the end of the school day. Take a look at some pictures of our work in progress and final creations :)

Bee-Bot Flight Plan, by Miss Howells

In reception we have been reading the story Troy's Movie. Troy and his robot friends made a flight plan for a film he was making. We decided we would like to make our own flight plan by inputting instructions into a Bee-Bot. We moved from planet to planet using language such as 'forward', 'backwards' 'to the side' some children even could even correctly give instructions using 'left' and 'right'. We guessed how many movements it would take to get to our final destination. We had some fantastic estimations! Later in the week we will be making our own ending to the story using our imagination and flight plans used in todays lesson. Visit our gallery again soon to see how did :)

Our Solar System, by Miss Howells

In our big book sessions this week, we have been learning new facts about planets by reading a non fiction book called Our Solar System. 

The children have been really good at remembering fact about space, especially planet names. 

Today we decided to focus on the order of the planets in the solar system. Children were chosen to represent the planets, the sun and some stars. The child who represented the sun stood in the middle of the room and the other children walked around them just like the planets orbit the sun. Children who were the stars stood in a star shape and moved around the room i.e the galaxy. 

We then watched some videos and songs about the order of the planets.

When you pick your child up from school, ask them what they know about planets. They will amaze you.

Space News, by Miss Howells

We have some exciting news.

A spaceship has been seen on our school's cameras and has made a big mess in our outdoor area.

Whilst the children have been outside they have used their imagination and found lots and lots of different clues that the spaceship has left for us. Some children have even found mud on the shed which they believe are 'footsteps'.

The children are so excited about what will happen next. 

We have voted on what we think was flying the spaceship and most children think it might be aliens but we do not know for sure.

This has been a fantastic start to our new topic, space. All children have been engaged and have used some brilliant language throughout their play because of it. 

Unplugged, by Miss Howells

This week we have had a focus on a new book called 'Unplugged'.

Unplugged is about a robot/computer called Blip who becomes unplugged and makes new friends and does different activities in a new environment (outside).

During the week we have looked at toys which need to be plugged in (or use batteries) and those which don't. As a class we discussed different toys that we play with and which toys we find the most 'fun'.  We voted as a class and the ipad had the majority vote. We discussed however, that the ipad is not fun when it needs to be plugged in and we can't move around with it or when it has run out of battery completely.

Later in the week, we used our phonics to write about what we would do with Blip if he was unplugged again.  The children used some previous experiences such as what they did during the half term. Some children then wrote about something new which they would teach Blip. The children came up with some lovely suggestions such as teaching him to "count so he can play hide and seek" and "swim" because it is really important skill to learn.

Autumn in the EYFS , by Mrs Hall

The children enjoyed exploring Autumn with their senses.

They went on Autumn walks to see the rich, warm colours of the falling leaves,

They felt Autumn treasures such as leaves, conkers and pine cones in a feely box  and they enjoyed exploring pumpkins too.

We enjoyed discussing all that we had found out and then expressing ourselves with art work.

Our work was then displayed in the School Harvest exhibition.

Nursery Smiles - with our Dental Nurse, by Mrs Hall

We were happy to get a visit from our Dental Nurse this week.

She explained how we should look after our teeth and brush them at least twice daily.

We found out how to clean our teeth and how we should visit the dentist.

We also  found out which foods make our teeth happy like fruit, vegetables and milk  and which to eat less of such as sweets and biscuits.

Some of us also dressed up and became the dentist and patient.

We are going to be brushing our teeth at School too.

Helicopter Stories, by Miss Howells

In Reception we have brought in a fantastic new idea of Helicopter Stories to support lots of different areas of your child's development. During Helicopter Stories, we act out stories as they are being told. It is up to each child's imagination to how they act out certain characters and objects. Children sit along the edge of the carpet space so that all children get a front row seat along the 'stage'. Helicopter Stories allow more and more children to participate and all the children are really excited to get involved. So far we have been acting out familiar stories such as 'Elmer' and 'Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?' which we have used during our Big Book sessions. As Reception become more confident in their understanding of story structures we will be making our own stories together, as a class, and acting them out which we hope the children will really enjoy. 

Exploring Our Senses, by Miss Howells

Throughout this half term we have been exploring all of our senses to link with our Marvelous Me topic.

We went on a listening walk around school. We closed our eyes and listened carefully for all the different noises we could hear in our environment.

The next week, we explored our sight. We looked carefully for creatures around the bug hotel, in the forest school, using language such as big, long and slimy.

We then explored our taste, smell and touch during circle times. We discussed how objects tasted, smelt and felt, taking turns to listen to everyones opinions.
