In maths we used a concrete method in order for us to understand multiplying large numbers better. The children used to wipeboards and counters to help multiply 3 digit numbers by one digit numbers.

In our indoor PE lessons we have been doing dance, in our groups we have been planning our dance with the theme of “through the jungle”. We drew up a plan on big paper for us all to follow!

We have been looking at ways in which we can show a number. We designed posters showing a number in four different ways, the standard form, the word form, the expanded form and pictorial form.

We have been looking at the story of Macbeth, we have been analysing one of the most famous scenes in the play where Macbeth and Banquo meet the three witches. In our groups we re-enacted the scene putting our own personal touch to it.

We have been using base 10 in our maths lessons when looking at place value. It gave the children a good visual when constructing numbers.

As it is the start of the year we have been looking at the wonderful poem ‘new beginning’ by Mancunian poet Tony Walsh. The poem is all about the new beginnings that start on the first day back at school. We made up actions in our table groups and performed the poem to the class giving it our own outlook and individual touch to it. 

Year 5's Eco Exhibition, by Miss Percival

In the summer Term, Year 5 have been learning all about our ever changing world as part of their Geography/ citizen topic. We looked at problems our world is currently facing such as: Global warming, deforestation, plastic and food waste. As part of an eco project, the children made a machine to help solve a world problem. They created an invention to help our planet such as: a machine to produce more oxygen, a food waste robot, a sea drone to collect rubbish, a water purifier to help places in drought and many more wonderful ideas. All the machine prototypes were made out of recycled items such as plastic bottles and cardboard boxes.The children worked so hard and produced posters, presentations and explanation sheets on their fantastic machines. We held an exhibition in our classes to show case the designs. Parents and other children were invited-We hope we have helped to share some ideas on how we can help our planet...

Sports for Schools - Sponsored event, by Mr Breslin

On Monday 3rd July, we welcomed former Team GB parlaympian, Anna Jackson to our school as part of our Sports for Schools sponsored event. It was a brilliant experience for the children to learn the importance of exercise and living a healthy and active lifestyle

The Big Sing, by Miss Dobie

The children in Year 6 and the choir performed at the Bridgewater Hall singing a range of 80’s songs. The children had lots of fun singing, dancing and wearing items associated with the decade. The children also met the new Lord Mayor of Manchester - June Hitchen. Well done to all the children in taking part and learning the songs!

Year 5's Trip to Liverpool World Museum , by Miss Percival

In year 5 we have been studying ' How did the Greek's change the world?' and as part of this exciting topic we went on a trip to the 'Liverpool world Museum' to discover more about Ancient Greece and the daily lives of the people. Luckily, we also had time during the day to explore the museum further with fantastic exhibitions on bugs, dinosaurs and an aquarium. Additionally, we recapped our previous science topic of 'Space' in the Space and Time exhibition. We had a fantastic day full of amazing learning.

During the Spring Term, we created movie trailers based on 'Carrie's War', a book we read in class. We practiced our filming and editing skills on the iPads to create our movie trailers. It was so much fun!

Year 5 Regrowth Project, by Miss Doyle

The year  5 children have been out on the field planting a variety of different vegetables in small pots ready to be planted in the larger beds in the poly tunnel It was really fun weeding the planters, turning over the soil and planting our seeds! A huge thank you to the parents who came to support our regrowth project! Now roll on summer so we can see our hard work pay off!

On World Book Day, we had great fun completing a range of ‘Alice in Wonderland’ themed activities. The day began with ‘Alice in Numberland’ maths games where we used our problem solving skills to answer different questions. We then used our English skills to create invitations to our ‘Mad Hatter Tea Party’. We finished the day by making ‘Mad Hatter’ hats and having our own party.

Young Voices 2018, by Miss Dobie

St Margaret Mary’s choir took part in this years Young Voices concert at the Manchester Arena. The children were joined by others schools from in and around Manchester. The children have shown great dedication and commitment in learning a range of songs and actions to perform in front of a live audience. 

The evening was a great success and everyone (including staff) had a fantastic evening and enjoyed being part of the event. Take a look at our photographs and videos from the evening.

Maths - Number pyramids using decimal numbers, by Mr Breslin

We used our fluency and reasoning skills to solve number pyramids with decimal numbers.

We had to add and subtract decimal numbers to complete the missing numbers in each pyramid.
