Remembrance Day , by Miss Dobie

For Remembrance Day, the children created their own poppies using scrunched up tissue paper. As a class, we created a wreath and displayed some beautiful examples of the Flanders Field poem.

Division , by Miss Dobie

Using counters, the children developed their understanding of division and focused on sharing equal amounts of counters between themselves in small groups. Next, the children looked at unequal amounts and the use of remainders. 

Unplugged, by Miss Dobie

As we school, we looked at a text called unplugged which is about a robot named Blip who is plugged into a computer. Due to a power cut, Blip becomes unplugged and is free to explore the outside world. Using the text as inspiration, the children created their own version of the story and created some very imaginative places for Blip to visit. The children really enjoyed their learning and created some fantastic stories.

The children in Year 4 visited the Just Youth centre in Salford and had so much fun! The children learnt about different Saints through a range of role play activities, discussed what makes them a Saint and asked questions about the different Saints lives. The children reflected on their own gifts and talents and took part in a range of team building activities.

This week, the children are learning a variety of strategies to solve multiplication sums. We are currently focusing on the grid method and recalling multiplication facts up to 12x12.

Forest school session 6, by Miss Dobie

For our final session this half-term, we created a fire and each child toasted a marshmallow and made their own smore. The children followed instructions carefully and respected the fire and used the correct protective equipment. Everyone was definitely mesmerised by the flames and felt a lot warmer sat around the campfire. Afterwards, the children enjoyed a cup of hot chocolate and reflected on their forest school experience.

This week, the children were taught how to use a bowsaw safely before creating their own tree cookie. The children followed each of the steps and showed great confidence when using tools.

In year 4, the children have been learning a range of times times up to 12x12. The children played a dice game involving their knowledge of the times tables. Each week, the children will be given a specific times tables to learn before taking part in a weekly quiz.

Can people with longer legs jump the furthest?, by Miss Dobie

As part of our Science learning, the children conducted their own investigation to explore whether people with longer legs can jump the furthest. The children made predictions, decided how they would conduct their investigation and then carried out a fair test. The children worked in small groups and measured the length of their legs and how far they jumped.

This week, the whole school are taking part in the Manchester Bee Project. Year 4 are using a variety of media to create their own frame which will be combined to create a final product. Here is our work so far, we cannot wait to see the final product!

The children visited our school library, where they were able to select their own reading book to keep in class. The children selected a book which interests them and will have regular opportunities to read their chosen book.

To celebrate the harvest, the children sketched still images of a variety of fruit, created their own acrostic harvest poem and used pointillism to create an autumnal tree.

Forest school session 3, by Miss Dobie

This week, the children learnt to create a shelter using a tarpaulin. The children used a timber hitch knot and an adjustable slip knot to tie their shelter to trees and used used tent pegs to secure the four corners of their shelter. Even in the rain, the children had an amazing time and showed great resilience and truly embraced the wet conditions. This week the children learnt to tie a variety of knots to create their own ninja star. Once the children had made their ninja star, they set up a designated throwing area and practised throwing their ninja star. Afterwards, the children explored the forest during free play and made their own bird feeders, shelters for animals and made their own mud paint.

We are very excited to be taking part in forest school sessions every Friday. The sessions are led by Miss Dobie and Miss Doyle and will vary each week. We will be developing the children's skills and offering an enriched environment for the children to explore. This week, the children had the opportunity to explore the site, understand the rules directly linked to forest school and created a fantastic flag with their peers made using mud paint. Overall, the children and adults had a fun experience and are looking forward to next Friday!

The Sacrament of Baptism, by Miss Dobie

As part of our RE learning, we have been discussing and learning about how we welcome others and how we are welcomed. We role played a baptism and discussed how we are all welcomed into God's family. The children definitely enjoyed taking on different roles and discussing how different people may feel and the importance of the Sacrament of Baptism.

Years 3 and 4 visited Chester Zoo as part of their Science learning. The children had the opportunity to see animals in their 'natural' habitats. It was a great day had by all and the bat cave was definitely a highlight for most!

The Queen's birthday , by Miss Dobie

As part of our topic 'Being British', we began by celebrating the Queen's birthday by throwing an afternoon tea party. The children experienced a range of British traditions including music, food and we discussed famous British people including members of the Royal family. The children created their own artwork inspired by Andy Warhol using famous British people and landmarks.

We were very lucky to be visited by Rachael Lindsay, who is the author of the book we have been reading in class, the Boglers Apprentice. Rachael discussed the main characters and the plot of the story and shared her inspiration for the book. We were very lucky to have her read an extract from her book.

After a lot of anticipation, the children got to build a fire, learn how to do this safely and looked closely at the materials and equipment used to build a safe and successful fire. The children toasted marshmallows and even had a cup of hot chocolate around the fire. A great session enjoyed by all!

This week, the children built their own bug hotel using a range of resources and materials found within the forest. Collectively, the children assembled the hotel filling each layer with materials suitable for a range of mini beasts. Next week, we will check to see if we have had any guests.

Forest school - day 4, by Miss Dobie

This week, the children worked with a range of tools to create their own tree cookie. First, the children learnt how to use a bow saw to cut a section from a tree branch. Next, the children used a hand drill to drill a hole into the tree cookie and threaded string through the hole to create a necklace. The children were able to decorate their tree cookie and tie the string using the knots the children have learnt in previous weeks.

The children also created bird feeders and scattered them around the forest. We can't wait to visit the forest next week to see if the birds have had a feast.
