Which material is the strongest to build a house?, by Miss White

Our Science topic this half term has been 'materials. The children have shown a great understanding of the different properties of materials and why they are suitable for different objects.

After reading the story of 'The Three Little Pigs' the children took part in an experient to see which material would make the best house for the pigs. The children split into groups and made houses from paper, wooden sticks, sticks, tinfoil and lego. The children worked wonderfully in their teams to create their houses. It was a shame we had to destroy them in the testing of our experient.

In Maths this week we made magical potions!

We used our knowledge of measurements to ensure the ingredients were exactly correct.

It was great fun and they tasted delicous!!

This half term we have been learning about the 1960s. The children have loved learning about what life was like in the 1960s, from the schools, to the fashion and in particular the music in the 1960s. We have learnt many of the Beatles songs but the children's favourite is Yellow Submarine. To end our topic we explored 1960s fashion and made out own tie dye t-shirts. The children had great fun making these and they turned out to be amazing! The children loved doing a catwalk in the playground to show off their fantstic tie dyed t-shirts.

 

Harvest Festival - Fruit cocktails, by Miss White

This week in Y2W we have been celebrating Harvest. We have thanked God for the crops and we have discussed the benefits of eating fruit and vegetables. We each designed and created our own fruit skewers. We thoroughly enjoyed this activity. Have a look at some of our creations...

As part of our 1960s topic we have been exploring artists from the 1960s. Today we looked at the work of Andy Warhol. The children had a fantastic afternoon and created wonderful portraits using charcoal.

The whole school took part in 'Race for life' and had a great time running to raise money for an amazing cause.

The children had a great time and were all awarded a medal at the end of the race - well done to all of our fantastic children.

Blackpool Zoo, by Miss White

This week the children in year two enjoyed a fantastic visit to Blackpool Zoo. The children loved exploring the different animals at the zoo, espeically the gorillas, tigers, orangatangs, giraffes, penguins and otters. All the children behaved extremely well and were a credit to the zoo. The children even remained calm when a seagull swooped down and stole Lexi's sandwhich.

This week we were very lucky to have a visit from the mobille farm. It was great fun and we got to feed sheep, hens, goats and llamas. 

Yoga and Relaxation, by Miss White

Durring the next 3 weeks children in year two will be completing their SATs. They have all worked tremendously hard all year and this is the time for them to celebrate all their hard work. To ensure the children stay calm and relaxed during this time we have been completing yoga and relaxation activties. 

George's Marvelous Medicine , by Miss White

In English this week we have been reading George's Marvellous Medicine. This is a fantastic book and the children love it! We are going to write our own instructions for 'How to make George's Marvelous Medicine'. To help us do this we actually made George's Marvelous medicine in class. 

Katie Morag comes to visit Year 2 , by Miss White

This half term we have been exploring many different Katie Morag stories. This week we wrote a character description about Katie Morag, describing her personality, appearance and her likes/ dislikes. Before writing our character description we had a visitit from the Isle of Struay.....it was Katie Morag!

 

Maths - Exploring Place Value , by Miss White

A key objective in year two is to understand the place value of a two - digit number. We used dienes blocks to discover all the different ways we could partion a number into tens and ones.

For example:

78 = 70 + 8

78 = 60 + 18

78 = 50 + 28

78 = 40 + 38

78 = 30 + 48

We were very lucky to have a visit from Manchester City coaches. The children practised dribbling and shooting skills. It was great fun!

We had a fantatsic day celebrating World Book Day. All the children looked wonderful and got into character.

We spent the day exploring the book 'The Day the Crayons Quit' by Drew Daywalt. The children loved this book, taking part in drama activities and writing their own letter to Duncan.
