Hinning House

On the 13th March, Year 6 set sail for the Lake District with their wellies and waterproofs. Over the course of an amazing week, we discovered the beautiful countryside of Cumbria. We took part in a number of activites including: Waterfall ( ghyll) climbing,  mountain climbing and orienteering. We had a fantastic time and learnt lots about the countryside and how to not get lost in it! Here are just a few of our special memories...

Christmas fair: Enterprise topic, by Mrs Rudd

Date: 8th Jan 2017 @ 1:12pm

All children worked hard to create tags, cards and treats for the Christmas fair.  They also worked hard to create newspaper articles about homelessness, persuasive posters and leaflets about our chosen charity.  Thank you to all the support that was shown at the fair; we were able to raise a lot of money for The Booth Centre who support rough sleepers in Manchester.

Interview with John, by Mrs Rudd

Date: 8th Jan 2017 @ 12:40pm

In Year 5 and 6, we have spent a lot of time looking at homelessness in our English and Topic work.  We were able to interview "John" (a local homeless man) in order to gain a better understanding of what life is like for rough sleepers.  All children were very empathetic and showed real concern and care for all people in this situation.

Happy Harvest!, by Miss Percival

Date: 10th Oct 2016 @ 8:39am

In Year 6 we have been doing a lot of work on Harvest and learning about the importance of sharing food with others.

As part of a DT task, we designed, planned and then created 'Rainbow Salads' which contained a range of fruits in various colours. We learnt all about the nutritional value of each fruit and how it helped our bodies and designed our salads around this. We chopped up the fruit and mixed up our salads before eating them together.

Happy Harvest to everyone...

Olympic Science , by Miss Waldron

Date: 27th Jun 2016 @ 8:11pm

This week in school we have been learning about the Olympics , we linked this with our science learning. We were sent an email by the 'British Olympics Association ' who had decided they were only sending the athletes with the longest legs to the Olympics. They thought that 'people with long legs jump further than people with short legs'. We set about to prove them wrong and planned an investigation to do this. We measured the length of children's legs and then carried out a fair test to measure how far they could jump. We then analysed our results and we discovered that people with longer legs don't necessarily jump the furthest!

Year 6 and the Chocolate Factory, by Miss Percival

Date: 1st Jun 2016 @ 10:05pm

Year 6 and The Chocolate Factory!

In Year 6 we have been writing Willy Wonka style recipes to create amazing Chocolate bars. We planned what ingredients we wanted to use and thought about the method we would use to make them. After writing up our fantastic recipes we then made our Wonka bars by melting chocolate into moulds and adding in all our chopped treats. We included lots of ingredients- especially popping candy! While the chocolate was setting in the fridges, we designed our Wonka bar wrappers with lots of bold colours and designs. Please take a look at some pictures of us with our final chocolate bars!

Einstein's Birthday!!!, by Miss Percival

Date: 16th Mar 2016 @ 9:07pm

For Albert Einstein's 137th birthday, Year 6 celebrated with two fun experiments. For the first one, we mixed bicarbonate of soda with vinegar to inflate balloons. We later found that the more bicarbonate soda added to the vinegar the larger the balloon expanded. This is due to the baking soda being a base and the vinegar being an acid and therefore when mixed CO2 (carbon dioxide) is released, creating a fully inflated balloon. After this experiment we carried out a popcorn blind taste-test where we tasted four different brands of popcorn: Tescos, Walkers, Aldi and Uncle Sams. The majority of Year 6 voted for Tesco's popcorn- we recommend you try some- although Aldi came in a close second! To end the exciting events we sang happy birthday and ate yummy cakes in honour of the great, German, theoretical physicist. Take a look at some of our pictures!

Year 6 Christmas Craft Day, by Miss Percival

Year 6- making shapes!, by Miss Percival

Date: 17th Jan 2016 @ 3:56pm

In year 6 we need to be able to classify 2D shapes based on their properties. To help us recognise shapes we made a variety of them in our gymnastics lesson and became Arcitects for a morning by building and designing our own structures using 2D and 3D shapes!
