Einstein's Birthday!!!, by Miss Percival

Date: 16th Mar 2016 @ 9:07pm

For Albert Einstein's 137th birthday, Year 6 celebrated with two fun experiments. For the first one, we mixed bicarbonate of soda with vinegar to inflate balloons. We later found that the more bicarbonate soda added to the vinegar the larger the balloon expanded. This is due to the baking soda being a base and the vinegar being an acid and therefore when mixed CO2 (carbon dioxide) is released, creating a fully inflated balloon. After this experiment we carried out a popcorn blind taste-test where we tasted four different brands of popcorn: Tescos, Walkers, Aldi and Uncle Sams. The majority of Year 6 voted for Tesco's popcorn- we recommend you try some- although Aldi came in a close second! To end the exciting events we sang happy birthday and ate yummy cakes in honour of the great, German, theoretical physicist. Take a look at some of our pictures!

EYFS - Chinese New year 'super learning day', by Mrs Smith

Date: 9th Feb 2016 @ 2:12pm

The children in the EYFS enjoyed a day of activities focusing on Chinese New year, learning about the year of the monkey. They started the day by listening to the story of 'the great race' and learnt how each year is named after an animal and how the Chinese calendar is compiled.

The children celebrated by sampling different Chinese Cuisine, they painted boxes to make small dragon puppets, they colour mixed to make lucky blossom pictures.

The children also looked at lots of different styles of Chinese writing, they each then made their own Happy new year cards attempting to copy Chinese writing.

The children then watched a DVD about celebrating Chinese New year, we watched a Dragon parade and watched how it is celebrated in Manchester with lots of fireworks.

We enjoyed lots of fun counting activities relating to 5 little dragons and ordered dragons 1-10

We also enjoyed role play in our house, we decorated the home corner with some lovely decorations donated by a very kind family in our current nursery class.
